This was a large grand spiral staircase supplied to a customer in Aberdeen. The spiral staircase was the main access the living space upstairs in this new build so it had to be large enough to comply with the regulations.

The model 71 spiral staircase can be purchased up to 2200mm diameter and this model was 2100mm. We considerably enlarged the lower two treads to create an impressive entrance to the flight and we introduced special L shaped treads to overcome the 100mm riser gap regulation.

The client had a large walkway upstairs which required some landing balustrade for protection. Instead of using the same spindles as the staircase we altered them for glass infill panels to enhance the passage of light. These were clamped in place between brushed stainless newel posts which were side fixed to the floor.

Our model 71 spiral stair is a custom made flight. It is formed with solid hardwood treads and cylindrical steel barrels which are placed over a steel centre column. These are alternately built up and spun around into position. The steel spacers – nor barrels act as spacers between the timber treads

For strength, the wood for the model 71 spiral staircase is always made from hardwood with the most popular choices being beech, oak, ash whilst we can also manufacture in maple, birch and walnut if desired.

The balustrade if formed with either a timber or a steel handrail and the infill beneath is normally enclosed with vertical steel spindles. We also have the option to enclosed the spiral staircase with curved glass or acrylic panels or opt for horizontal stainless steel bars or indeed curved perforated steel panels.

The wood in the model 71 spiral stair is generally oiled or varnished in the factory before dispatch. We have however supplied the timber stained or white waxed and we have delivered the entire staircase with untreated timber to allow finishing on site.
